Brothers and Sisters,
Just this week, I was talking with someone about how much the world had changed since my childhood. Some of you, of course, have lived far longer and have seen much more change than I have, but it’s stunning how much the world changes in even a short amount of time.
Simply put, I look at my children, and it seems like they’re growing up in a different world than the one I knew as a child.
Constant change in our lives and in our world can be wearying, to say the least. I’ve certainly felt that, and I suspect that you have, too. That lived reality is part of why I find great comfort in the fact that God doesn’t change.
In Psalm 100, appointed for this Sunday, we read:
“For the LORD is gracious, his mercy is everlasting, and his truth endures from generation to generation.”
God doesn’t change. This verse reassures us. First, we see that the Lord’s mercy doesn’t change. His perfect love for us doesn’t change. His determination to rescue us doesn’t change. His readiness to forgive our sins doesn’t change. His infinite compassion for us doesn’t change. He loves us perfectly and forever.
God’s truth also doesn’t change. As Psalm 100 tells us, his truth endures from generation to generation. That’s a striking contrast to what we find in our culture. Our culture seems to change daily. The values of our culture seem to shift constantly. God’s truth isn’t like that. It has never changed, and it never will.
The Scriptures will always be reliable. Even as the world moves at a frantic pace, the Holy Scriptures will always be true.
A God whose mercy is everlasting and whose truth endures from generation to generation is a God we can trust. We can rely on a God like that completely and forever.
Rely on God and rest in him.
In Christ,
Fr. Caleb
