Brothers and Sisters,
I find the psalm appointed for this coming Sunday, Psalm 89, deeply encouraging. In verses 15-18, we read:
Blessed are the people, O LORD, who rejoice in you; they shall walk in the light of your countenance. Their delight shall be in your Name all the day long, and in your righteousness shall they make their boast. For you are the glory of their strength, and by your favor you shall lift up our might. For the LORD is our defense; the Holy One of Israel is our King.
All of us, I think, long for security in what is often a deeply uncertain world. Our lives can be unpredictable, sometimes overwhelmingly so. The world around is certainly unpredictable. Change is constant. It’s natural that we would look for stability and safety, something in which to place our confidence and our hope. Unfortunately, looking for our security in the wrong place only makes the situation worse. In a materialistic society like ours, of course, the temptation is to look for our security in material things. Money and possessions can become what we look to for our defense. Of course, we could look for security in any number of other places. The common thread is that we, too often, look for security in things that we can lose and things that can change. That’s a recipe for disappointment.
Looking to the Lord for our security, on the other hand, won’t lead to disappointment. He doesn’t change. He doesn’t fail. Trust in him. He is our perfect King. He is our perfect defense.
In Christ,
Fr. Caleb
